Architect Chris Tate designed an unconventional beach house in Piha, New Zealand, that challenges traditional ideas of coastal architecture. Known as 'The Bunker,' the project was developed in close collaboration with its owner and took approximately 14 years to progress from the initial concept to completion. The site presented significant environmental challenges, including strong winds, salt exposure, shifting sand, and the rugged conditions of Piha’s west coast landscape. To address these constraints, Tate created a structure inspired in part by historic coastal fortifications from World War II. The home adopts a protective and solid appearance while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding ocean, dunes, and hills. One of its most distinctive engineering features is a structural system that appears to form a V shape but is actually an X-shaped support extending 18 meters through the sand into bedrock. This solution enabled a dramatic cantilever while providing stability in the demanding environment. Inside, the house was designed both as a social gathering place and as a private retreat. The interior features a restrained palette of charred timber, blackened steel, matte-finish ceramics, and other durable materials chosen to withstand coastal conditions. A narrow opening facing the ocean frames views of the landscape while helping protect the interior from the elements. Rather than embracing the light and airy aesthetic commonly associated with beach houses, The Bunker uses dark tones and a more introspective design language. The project received widespread recognition and won the 2025 Trends International Design Awards New Zealand Designer New Home of the Year, highlighting its innovative blend of engineering, durability, and architectural expression.
