A fair-sized whale lingering in view - tail flukes seen several times - for 5 minutes c2 miles west of the Coastwatch lookout at the Bill at 8.45 this evening per Dave Parker. Just having a look for it now at last light but nothing immediately visible.

"Dredging for shellfish in some of Ireland’s most sensitive marine areas is wiping out seagrass meadows that play a critical role in capturing vast amounts of carbon and in enriching biodiversity." @coastwatch-ire.bsky.social warns.

A few more snaps from Anglesey the other day.

The final photo shows the cliffs below the Moelfre Coastwatch Station, where the Hindlea foundered in 1959. The most famous shipwreck on this coastline was that of the Royal Charter, 100 years earlier - see link

Lowest level of plastic bottle litter in 35 years, and most bottles were older than the deposit return scheme. From a peak of 100 bottles per kilometre in 2010, it has dropped to just below eight bottles per kilometre in 2024 #spéirghrom #ireland

Good to see the Coastwatch surveys indicating nitrate levels lower in coastal areas. Less chemical fertilisers, some reduced sewage & weather all possibly playing a part. Not good to see less animal life sightings & issues with pollution reporting.

Coastwatch officers. Important job in tricky coastal
locations.

Perhaps also watching out for misinformation and idiotic behaviour arriving from across the pond.

On the fourth day of Christmas, having visited Brentwood yesterday, we journey north to celebrate another amazing East Anglian location.

So where am I? Answer given at the end of the day.

Lots of ice on the Great Lakes right now, especially Lake Erie. 33% overall, but can increase with cold weather.

Some good news from Ireland.

Marine litter on Irish beaches is at its lowest level in 25 years.

“…the newly introduced deposit/return system on plastic drinks, bottles and cans has really made a difference".

More to do but great to see action having an impact.
