South American coati (Nasua nasua). Coatis show stark social contrast: females & young form coordinated bands of up to 30 for foraging, grooming and predator defense, while adult males remain solitary. #nature #wildlife #biology
The South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a cat-sized mammal with soft, warm reddish-brown fur, a dark elongated snout, and small rounded ears. Its long, bushy tail features light and dark brown rings, held straight up like a flagpole as it walks. Diurnal and highly active, coatis use sharp claws and a flexible, hog-like nose to root through soil and leaves for fruits, insects, and small animals.

An-interspecies ballgame with a ball made by a raccoon! "After watching, the sister raccoon was successfully able create her own toys. Later, she and her sister used one of the crafted balls to play with a group of juvenile coatis, a related mammal also endemic to Cozumel."
On This Mexican Island, Raccoons Make and Play With Toys (and Also Sip Margaritas) (Gift Article)
Scientists observed a family of pygmy raccoons near a Cozumel beach club learning from one another how to craft balls from paper, an indication that the animals have a culture.

"Coatis are omnivores; their diet consists mainly of ground litter, invertebrates, such as tarantula, and fruit. They also eat small vertebrate prey, such as lizards, rodents, small birds, birds' eggs, and crocodile eggs."

Indeed! I do my part for tapir propaganda (they need MUCH more love and conservation efforts), but I need to draw more coatis... uh I got SO emotional first time I spotted them in a park I almost forgot the experience, haha :D!

Later in April (the 27th) we will have the World Tapir Day! Let's start drawing!

This tutorial for begginers is the first page of my 2024 guide. The pages 2 and 3 are available on my Ko-Fi, for free - but please leave a tip if you like them ;)

A chart by Ground Pear showing the steps to draw a lowland tapir, walking, in profile, caption: "1- Start by the basic shapes of the body (a bean may suffice!) and the head (a rounded triangle or cone). The neck in this species has a very elegant curve; 2- Add some truncated cones and cylinders for the short, strong paws. Observe carefully the articulations; 3- Time for some very characteristic details! The small trunk, the oval ears, the cute eyes, and the tiny tail. The forepaws have four hooves each, and the hindpaws have tree; 4- lineart and coloring. The lowland tapir is usually greyish-brown and countershaded, but there are some color variations. It also has a small upright mane. That's it! Now try to draw more tapirs. They are very interesting and deserve a lot of love." End of caption. The page also shows three extra small sketches of tapis sleeping, swimming, and running. Background in pastel blue with polka dots.
