It was great to join local leaders in Manitowoc to celebrate the completion of the USS Cobia restoration project. The state was proud to support this project to ensure future generations can learn about the USS Cobia and our state's proud shipbuilding and maritime history.

2 sea turtles checking each other out at the surface of the water and a small school of cobia passing by. Cobia grow to about 6 feet and are often seen hanging out with manta rays, large sharks, sea turtles & manatees.

🌱Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Chelsea' (Barnell L. Cobia/Brindley's Nurseries, >2002). A pale yellow fimbriated cv blooming on a small young plant, thus fringes in hiding, maybe next try.🌞After 2002 death of innovator B.L. Cobia, most seedlings were destroyed, this among several recovered.😃 Cactaceae

For no-theme #SundayFishSketch I tried drawing a cobia from memory without reference photos! Cobia are farmed here in #Taiwan (known here as 海鱺) and I've seen cobia steaks distributed at Costco. I happened upon a cobia carcass at a tidepool field this l weekend, hence the idea. 🐡🦑🧪

A Cobia hitching a ride in the slipstream of a Spotted Eagle Ray. They're related to remoras but get much larger (6 feet). They don't attach to a host like a remora but will hitch a ride in the slipstream to save energy while migrating.

🙏🌱Thanks very much - that's Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Ascot' aka 'Red Aspen' (Barnell L. Cobia, 1992) - here's a photo snapped moments ago, getting ready to burst into bloom again. The late Mr. Cobia was the first to develop and introduce fimbriated (fringed) cultivars.

💛🌱Can't blame Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Thor Sophia' (Barnell L. Cobia, 1990s) for her protest at being posed against an icy window.🥶 Smallest flowered yellow that I grow, with beautiful swept back form - different than 'Outono Brasil'. Cactaceae

🌱Correction with apologies - Barnell L. Cobia passed away in 2003 rather than 2002 - a huge loss either way.

@juliasaltzman.bsky.social was in the right place at the right time to record and generate an ethogram of a stingray-cobia pair, an interaction fishers have relied on to find and sight-fish for cobia!

Something very fishy about this sea turtle. I often see 1 or 2 fish (usually cobia) following sea turtles, but this is the first time I've seen a school of fish (amberjacks) following a loggerhead sea turtle. St Pete, Florida.

🌱Fringed Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Ascot' (Barnell L. Cobia, 1992), an advanced generation S. russelliana x S. truncata hybrid, has actinomorphic floral symmetry & bloom time of the former, clawed phylloclades of the latter. Fimbriation is an exploitable mutation that comes from neither.😃 Cactaceae
