A little historical note on that: colorization was never actually the point. 🧵
I was in post production at Lorimar in the late eighties while the colorization was going on. I had a good friend who was involved in doing the restoration work prior to colorization.

A huge thing to the credit of Ted Turner: he was widely criticized for his dumb and stupid classic movie colorization scheme and instead of doubling down and crashing out over the negative publicity, he listened to the criticism and launched Turner Classic Movies.

A very good remake of the original 1982 BurgerTime that also acts as a perfect example for a colorization hack tutorial.

Ted Turner was briefly so destructive to film preservation that the GOVERNMENT created the National Film Registry to keep some films safe, then Turner was like “fine! You like preservation so much, here’s a channel that just shows movies unaltered for 24 hours!!!” and it was the best channel ever.

Obviously, this conversation stayed with me because it never had occurred to me colorization was a front for restoration, but in the long term it sure looks like Ted won that battle, and that war. Colorization has pretty much vanished, and TCM is right there showing the originals...
