November’s birth flower, the chrysanthemum, symbolises friendship and ‘cheerfulness in adversity’ in the Victorian language of flowers. According to folklore, wearing one protects against divine wrath, while chrysanthemums grown in the garden are said to keep evil spirits at bay.
