#ComeFollowMe
Apropos of absolutely nothing else but this week's #ComeFollowMe ...
Elijah, giving a talk in Israel, choosing to allow for plausible deniability that he's really talking about the atrocities of Ahab in his talk "Maybe We Should All Do Good Things", but still hoping Ahab's fans "Get It".

“King Darius! Phineas & Ferb are building a temple in Jerusalem!”

Was explaining to my kids last week that the Prophet Isaiah is hella woke. And the intro to this week's #ComeFollowMe doesn't hurt the stanning.

Read Isaiah 14 as if presented to a modern Tyrant. It still tracks.

Reading the quirks in the list of Tribal heads in Numbers 13 hits very different after reading these books by @andytobo.bsky.social . #ComeFollowMe
Related, these companion books by Andrew Tobolowsky rocked my world, and are fantastic. "The Sons of Jacob and the Sons of Herakles" & "The Myth of the Twelve Tribes of Israel: New Identities Across Time and Space". (There's a whole chapter on Latter-day Saint experience in the second book!)

Relevant for this week's #ComeFollowMe, something I wrote last year involving a close reading of Moroni 8 on infant baptism:

Also, reminder that the Doctrine and Covenants -twice- directly uses language from the Song of Solomon. Including this week's reading of D&C 5:14 #ComeFollowMe

Noting again for this week's #ComeFollowMe that in the Doctrine and Covenants (section 128) we have a reference to the angel Raphael, the only appearance of that name in our canon, since the only other appearance of Raphael in the Bible is in Tobit in the Apocrypha.

Important doctrinal distinction in #ComeFollowMe that should be obvious, but clearly for many is not. "In the Church today, you may hear about Israel in expressions like 'the gathering of Israel.' ... In these cases, we aren’t talking or singing about . . . the modern nation called Israel."

✅️ Completed my first complete read-through of Ruth ( Ρουθ ) in the Greek Septuagint (LXX)! First book of the Bible I've been able to read start to finish in Greek in a single sitting. Fun stuff!

Serendipitous that the final Office of Readings passage for this Liturgical Year lines up beautifully with this week's #ComeFollowMe once again.

I divide #ComeFollowMe into 5 daily readings per week.

Today included Psalm 23, which I studied with my son, who agreed to work on memorizing it this week.

After dropping him off at school, I listened, as I always do, to the Daily Catholic Mass Reading.

Today's Responsorial Psalm was Psalm 23.

I'll be using 'God's Stories As Told By God's Children' (From The Bible For Normal People) as a compliment to #ComeFollowMe weekly Old Testament readings with my family this year. It's an EXCELLENT book for kids and adults alike - Bible scholars retelling the stories with good context & questions.

I don't think the 'wicked man' here is Martin Harris (or at least not primarily). I think verse 13 reveals that it's describing Joseph himself, reminiscent of when Joseph wasn't allowed to take the plates yet, due to motivations being off course at the moment. #ComeFollowMe

One of my favorite tidbits is Joseph Smith dismissing the Song of Solomon as uninspired in 1831, only to present the Voice of the Lord as quoting it in 2 different modern revelation texts after that. #ComeFollowMe

For #ComeFollowMe this week, consider including Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho, and considering why the main beats of the story resonated and developed new meaning among enslaved persons in 19th Century America, and why it's still a powerful song of Hope today.

I think it could be helpful if we consider our small acts of Ceremonial Secrecy in the Temple regarding the content of the names, signs and tokens as substantially a ritual re-enactment of the substance of D&C 5:2-3. #ComeFollowMe
January 28, 2025 at 12:24 PM
Reminder that D&C 76:23-24 shouldn't be used a prooftext for the doctrine of humanity's pre-mortal relationship to God, but is noting the transformative adoption into the divine family that comes through Jesus Christ. (Even the header gets this one right!) cf. Mosiah 5:7 #ComeFollowMe
