I thought the abilities here made me think of picking up new power-ups and equipment and opening up new areas (unblockability, more power = better and better gear). Metroidvania mechanics!

Obviously a human/dog pair, but also: Haldan's ability is good, but it's useless without Pako's support - while dog friend's abilities work fine on their own. I think that maps well to how good old Charlie Brown is always the underappreciated butt monkey.

Frog human horror? Only one thing comes to mind! Not super familiar with Battletoads so can't speak to the abilities, but the three colors at least I found match pretty well the three characters (dutiful leader, fame seeker, big guy).
