#CommonNames
Late entry for both #Wildflowerhour and the summer flowering calendar, in full bloom despite the drought (much to the relief of hungry insects) were beautiful clouds of Wild Clematis, Clematis vitalba. With two quirky #CommonNames : Old Man's Beard and Traveller's Joy. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

Late for #Wildflowerhour but it got me thinking: to modern ears which don't know their origins, what wildflowers *don't* have quirky #CommonNames?! 🙂 Still flowering locally were Cat's-ear (miaow), Lady's Bedstraw, Queen Anne's Lace, Lesser Spearwort... @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

Herb-Robert, with four instead of its usual five petals. This flower was known as 'Death-Come-Quickly' and it was considered (very) bad luck to hang it indoors. Also known as 'Stinking Bob.' #wildflowerhour #commonnames

Bittersweet, Dún Laoghaire. Also known as Woody Nightshade and Posionberry, it's highly toxic to humans. I don't envy whoever tasted it to come up with its name. #wildflowerhour #commonnames

Bluesky not working properly last night so re-posting this #wildflowerhour #CommonNames
Deadly Nightshade. The first part of the common name is self-explanatory; the second comes from the Old English word 'nihtscada'. It might refer to dark berries, the fact that the plant grows in shady places, or its poisonous properties, long linked to darkness and evil. #wildflowerhour #CommonNames

My only find for #WildflowerHour #CommonNames theme was this Dittander Lepidium latifolium; my first encounter with the plant, so it was worth missing a bus! More info in ALT

#WildflowerHour #CommonNames Perennial Sow-thistle, Sonchus arvensis on a verge near Monmouth. Tradition has it that the Sonchus genus, Sow-thistles, were fed to lactating sows to increase milk production. Older legends include strengthening hares.

Many thanks, Fran! Frustratingly, the BlueSky site was unavailable last night, so I wasn't able to post anything until very late. I've just uploaded the 2nd set of plants with quirky #CommonNames.

I love Sundews, they are such extraordinary plants.

As #CommonNames go, this one is perfect - in the sun those sticky, deadly beads glimmer like dew, luring unwary insects to an untimely death.

This Sundew was one of many I enjoyed seeing on the Purbeck Heaths. So beautiful. 💚

Common restharrow (ononis repens) with bee visitor from my walk today at Streatley (W. Berks). In old farming days its deep, wiry roots routinely snagged heavy horse-drawn ploughs (harrows) forcing the harrow to rest. Late for #wildflowerhour #CommonNames
