Have you read The Republic? If Plato was accurately transcribing Socrates, then he was basically a fascist who believed in a caste system, "natural" elites ruling the commoners thru deceit, a eugenicist, a fanboy of Sparta and its apartheid genocide of helots. To name a few.

So poor people were buying spices and making better food, so the rich people got pissed at that, because they didn't want to be like commoners, so they stopped using spices and seasonings as a show of superiority. Eventually it no longer became profitable (lots of reasons not just this).
