You work on a project until you’re bored then you move on to the next client.” “Well,” Fatima interjected, “it seems we’re all grappling with meaning in some way or another. Mort, you were deep in thought there. Anything to add?” Mort blinked, drawn out of his contemplation. “Nothing. Just comiserating in Alex’s identity crisis. Alex I feel you bro. Our actions are insignificant on the grand scale of things.” Viv squeezed his hand gently. “But that’s not true, love. Your actions matter to us.” Emi nodded in agreement. “And besides,” she added with a playful smile, “we just spent the better part of an evening discussing the profound implications of quantum conscious- ness. Surely that has some meaning!” The group chuckled, a momentary lightness breaking through the existential angst. Alex cleared his throat. “Speaking of which, Mort,” he said, turning towards Mort, “When did you get such a deep understanding of the brain.” Mort shrugged. “It’s just a hobby, really.” Alex leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with a newfound enthusiasm. “But what if it was more than a hobby? What if we could combine your knowledge with my resources and actually do something that matters?”
