He saw my face and corrected himself. "Oh, I meant atypical. That's what they call THOSE people now, right?"

It's not the word, you fucker. It's the utter contempt in your voice. #ConferenceAdventures

A guy at a stand just used the word "neurodivergent" in the same way you'd use the r-word. The euphemism treadmill is fucking real. #ConferenceAdventures

The goal for today is to get the IG of any cute girls who compliment my rainbow pin, instead of, as last time, realising six full working days later that they were, in fact, hitting on me.

Oh, also, to crush my talk, but y'all know that's a given ;) #ConferenceAdventures

68% of companies surveyed feel people are taking more sick days.

Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with how we let a virus that affects the immune system and increases disability rates run rampant #ConferenceAdventures

At an extremely corporate event organized by an extremely corporate consultancy firm, and the main speaker starts talking about how the growing inequality is a bad sign.

What... What is happening? #ConferenceAdventures

Alright, friends, today is conference day! I'll use this thread to comment on it. Feel free to mute it and/or follow along, depending on what you're into #ConferenceAdventures

(See the #ConferenceAdventures hashtag) it's a lot less likely than you'd think.

You're more likely to get insta-rejected by one of the application questions (e.g. you click the "I prefer remote work" option in an application questionnaire and a simple IF ELSE script rejects you)

They're presenting the results of a survey on AI usage. 75% use it, but only 20% say it makes a real difference in their output.

Wish they'd asked that 20% if that difference amounts to "I write emails faster" #ConferenceAdventures

I feel like any analysis that doesn't take into account that we're pouring literally trillions of dollars into tools that will never be able to produce that amount of value can be safely ignored tbh #ConferenceAdventures

Second speaker also keeps prefacing everything he says with the disclaimer that he of course understands all these legal concepts are very complex and very hard to understand.

Which is understandable, as most of the audience seem to be C-level executives #ConferenceAdventures

The guy giving the talk starts going on about how complex and difficult to understand the EU's AI Act definition of "AI system" is.

I don't know, man. Maybe it's because I'm so used to parsing complex texts, but it seems to me like this might be a skill issue #ConferenceAdventures

Arrived to the corporate event I had been invited to very proud of my H&M blazer only to discover it had more of a Louis Vuitton vibe #ConferenceAdventures

Pro-tip: QR codes should always be black and white. Don't invert the color scheme, either. Many phone models struggle to capture them otherwise. Also, you should always include the url.

Your fancy inbound sales form is useless if people can't fucking access it, dipshit #ConferenceAdventures

Got a flyer that promised a gift to anyone who visited a stand.

When I showed it to the man running it, he reached for a water bottle and asked me how many employees the company I work for has.

When he heard the answer, he made a face and gave me a pen instead.

Rude.

Seriously tho, the people at the stands are super stingy with their merch. They'll only give it to you if you can convincingly lie your way through a conversation that convinces them there's a real possibility that you'll buy their products... And I'm not a very good liar :(

BAD: The people at the stands seem very unwilling to give out merch

GOOD: The people at the stands are VERY willing to give out free food

It's only twelve and I've already eaten a donut, a croissant, a mantecado and a waffle, plus two cups of tea

At a talk about remote work.

The speaker totally gave up on pretending she's analysing the phenomenon and is just telling us about her company's cool remote policy to recruit us.

And hey, it's working. I already applied to their company #ConferenceAdventures

Don’t want to give the panelist too much credit as her go-to example of autism was Sheldon. But tbh the panel was good... except for the part where the audience really didn’t want to engage with the message. Including my co-worker, who made some... remarks after it #ConferenceAdventures

The next skeet is too long so have it in image form.

(Audience member 2 didn’t say that *exactly*, but my bullshit filter makes it impossible to remember their actual words instead of what they actually meant. Use your imagination.)

At a conference like this one every talk is trying to sell you something.

Sometimes they're selling a product. Sometimes they're selling someone's career as an expert consultant.

If I have to listen to a sales pitch, I'd rather it has something real behind it to back it up.

This is new. A talk that discusses what AI can realistically do well and what it can't.

The person giving it is from a company whose main competitor has based their entire value proposition on AI, so I'm sure some will dismiss the talk, of course

Love when I ask vendors what their AI products have to offer and the answer is "the same analytics your old platform already give you automatically, but more expensive."

Summary of this conference so far:

Chatbots.

All of these products are chatbots.

The best ones are powered by ChatGPT or Gemini, which means you could avoid the middleman and just use those platforms instead.

The other ones are worse than ChatGPT, which is saying something #ConferenceAdventures
