The entire concept of "ideological conformity" applied to academia makes no sense. Is the belief that the Earth is round a type of conformity? On some level, yes: Everyone thinks the same thing.

Our society is so allergic to showing gender non-conformity that even with characters that are known for that non-conformity, there's often a "remedial" confirmation of gender roles in other ways for that character, as if to "make up" for it.
Even if that non-conformity is shown as heroic.
