I taught two summer camp sessions for 9-14 year olds, one on conlanging and one on general linguistics and was surprised to find that the general ling one went better, the conlanging one they had fun with for the first week but by week 2 were losing focus a bit
You know what I think a certain audience of kids would eat up? A follow-along podcast with worksheets they could fill up all about how to build your first conlang as a way of exploring how language works. Bonus points if it's fantasy flavored to catch all those d&d folks.

the gateway drug for me was probably conlanging.
i'd always been interested in languages & writing systems, but it wasn't until i discovered conlanging that i started seriously looking into phonetics/phonology & morphosyntax, & from there discovering Old English which really catapulted my interest.
