#NewReleases2026 #162

Another splendid Mannheim man unearthed by the ever-fabulous L'Arte del Mondo. Not profound, but plenty of fun - the symphonies of Friedrich Schwindl (1737-1786) are sure to give you an armful of #FridayFeeling! #ContemporariesOfHaydn

Lovely recording of sonata by Austrian composer Marianna Martines (1744-1812). She was taught by Joseph Haydn. (I guess she’ll be on your threads re
#ContemporariesOfHaydn, @deeplyclassical.bsky.social?)
@garrt.bsky.social recently wrote an article for the NY Times about composer Marianna Martines. Her sonatas never fail to make me smile which is why her G major sonata is on my upcoming recital. Here's a recording of it I just made for our Piano Music She Wrote project.

Ooh, that's fun.
Relatedly, it was listening to your #ContemporariesOfHaydn playlist today while I worked.

Current listening has a very @deeplyclassical.bsky.social / The Symphonist vibe about it. #ContemporariesofHaydn

The question, of course, is whether we went too big, too early. Outside of Mozart, who was so consistently good as Haydn? Some briefly get within touching distance of greatness - Kraus, Arriaga- but is #ContemporariesOfHaydn doomed by the quality of #A-Haydn-A-Day? #philosophy

Another great concert in Copenhagen. This time at the Queen's Hall, the Black Diamond, part of the Royal Danish Library. One for #ContemporariesofHaydn (Stamitz, Haydn, CPE Bach and Mozart) and #A-Haydn-A-Day coco.dk/en/concert/1...

Week 2 of #ContemporariesOfHaydn - the splendid Ditters Von Dittersdorf.
#ContemporariesOfHaydn #6

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799)

Best buddies with Haydn, Dittersdorf wrote more symphonies than the Father of the Genre himself. They follow different rules, many have crazy titles like "The Delirium of Composers", and one of the most famous isn't by him at all!

After @loveinner.bsky.social random number generating kickstart to the #A-Haydn-A-Day symphony project, we now move to the A-Z curation of @deeplyclassical.bsky.social and the #ContemporariesofHaydn project. Off we go bsky.app/profile/deep...
#ContemporariesOfHaydn #1

Anton Fils (1733-1760)

Haydn is known as The Father of The Symphony, but many composers cultivated and spread the new genre across the courts and concert halls of Europe. Fils composed at least 34 symphonies, including this G-minor stormer, before he died at just 26.

I like this type of cult too. Next - well, personally, I'm about to listen to Dorati's Haydn opera's boxset (just listened to Armida today). After that, the piano trios (Beaux Arts Trio of course). But I think the cult leaders are planning a #ContemporariesofHaydn project followed by the quartets.

J C Bach, Vanhal, Pleyel, Dittersdorf, Stamitz, Schmittbaur for instance (and numerous others of course) #ContemporariesOfHaydn

I really need to immerse myself in other composers of Haydn's time which (apart from Mozart) I've neglected #ContemporariesofHaydn

I've been trying to work out a playlist for Friday. A trip to London and back. It may well be this one. After @loveinner.bsky.social Haydn quartet and your #ContemporariesOfHaydn obviously

Brilliant! And the next concert looks great too - one for both the #A-Haydn-A-Day and the #ContemporariesOfHaydn hashtags!

Also this week, symphonies by one of the finest #ContemporariesOfHaydn. La Stagione Frankfurt have now recorded all 12 mature symphonies by Franz Ignaz Beck (1734-1809). This Beck was no loser, baby. I've waited for this #NewRelease since the last volume, which came out 21 years ago!

Happy #NewReleaseFriday! If you followed my #ContemporariesOfHaydn series, you'll already know Franz Xaver Richter (1709-1789). If not, this #NewRelease from CPO is a great way to meet him. If Papa Joe was the father of the symphony, Franz is at least a great uncle of the genre!

#NewRelease Johann Baptist Vaňhal aka Vaňhal/Waṅhal/Wanhall/Vanhal/Van Hall (1739-1813) was one of the finest and most prolific #ContemporariesOfHaydn. His symphonies have largely been the preserve of period bands, but these sweet and stylish modern-instrument accounts are absolutely first-class.

Happy #NewReleaseFriday! Georg Joseph Vogler (1749-1814) was one of the most celebrated #ContemporariesOfHaydn in his lifetime, yet Mozart considered him a charlatan. Which side of history will Howard Griffiths prove right with his intriguing #NewRelease?

#NewReleaseFriday is late again, but it's my birthday today, so sampling the week's symphony and orchestral #NewReleases is like opening a bumper set of presents. First recordings of symphonies by one of my favourite #ContemporariesOfHaydn? Thanks, that's just what I wanted!

Another satisfied #ContemporariesOfHaydn customer.
Last night I had this on to drive the 2 hours to do an airport pickup. I started at the Pleyel, and it was still going as I pulled into the car park. Because I had the satnav on I don't know whose was whose, so I'm goung to have to do it again. Some crackers in there. Recommended listening.

All the symphonies are on my #ContemporariesOfHaydn playlist. I was going to end the series here, but I've got five more composers I don't want to miss out, so I'll finish the series next week instead.

Five more #ContemporariesOfHaydn 🧵

#26 Pieter van Maldere (1729-1768)

Maldere visited Dublin, Paris and Vienna as a violin virtuoso before returning to his native Brussels. His 40 symphonies circulated far and wide, from Sweden to the New World. Haydn, Mozart and Dittersdorf all knew his work.
