Wat mij uiteindelijk bijblijft, is de hypocrisie van Google. Over elk denkbaar mogelijk aanstootgevend dingetje een beslisboom ontwerpen, maar de contentmoderators niet de ruimte willen geven om dingen echt goed uit te zoeken. En ook Googles core values, al die mooie inclusieve of progressieve ideeën (opkomen voor lhbti-rechten, informatie over het recht op abortus, het belang van vrijheid van meningsuiting) gaan rap het raam uit als de omzet in gevaar komt. In advertenties voor het Midden-Oosten, bijvoorbeeld, is elke toespeling op seks, abortus, gelijke rechten en politiek uit den boze. De oplossing is dan niet om daar geen zaken te doen, maar om voor die landen een stringenter beleid te formuleren. In de handleiding heet het bij een advertentie waarin diversiteit en inclusiviteit worden gepromoot zo: ‘alhoewel consistent met Google-waarden, is dit een politieke zaak’ en dus verboden in het Midden-Oosten.
