Filtr has been amazing — I switched to it from a pretty aggressive ControlD profile and haven’t noticed anything getting through.

I started with pi-hole - but it was tricky to block entire servies (plus didn't come with me when I left home - without lots of funsies with aws), then nextdns and now controld (both very good, low cost, just prefer controld for features)

Setting up a private DNS is what's best in this case. Something like DNSForge, ControlD, or even Cloudflare's DNS.

For those who care about such things, I note that NordVPN's post-quantum encryption setting stops the ControlD DNS service from working, even if you have their 'custom DNS' turned off.

Ofc, ControlD might well say that it's not really designed to work with a VPN.
