Ananda Coomaraswamy famously said museums are where we proudly display the artifacts of a way of life that has become impossible. A new mass transit subway stop nextdoor to a car museum makes a terrific A1 photo in today’s LA Times, by Carlin Stiehl.

The provenance of this object is incredible. Sold to the museum by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, born to a Tamil father and British mother in Brit. Ceylon, lost his had at a young age, grew up mainly in England, and made it his life’s goal to educate Westerners about Indian/Asian arts. Massive collector.

The Dance of Shiva

Creation arises from the drum: protection proceeds from the hand of hope: from fire proceeds destruction: the foot held aloft gives release. It will be observed that the fourth hand points to this lifted foot, the refuge of the soul.

[…] being mortal does not refer to the fact that one dies after full term of life, but to the nature of our “life”, which is a matter of constant deaths, day after day.
