Kommen wir zu den Krebsen im Plankton. Als erstes die Ruderfußkrebse. Copepoda
October 30, 2023 at 6:49 PM

Tupinicaris rupestris, a new genus proposed to the Brazilian fauna of Parastenocarididae Copepoda. Meiofaunal, less than 300 micrometers, freshwater in the Espinhaço Mountain range of Minas Gerais state. Zootaxa Vol. 5512 No. 2: 19 Sept. 2024. The Tupi are native Brazilians. Me and colleagues. 🧪

Despite macrophotographies, I am also a taxonomist of these microcrustaceans (Copepoda, Harpacticoida). They are less than 1mm long, and belong to the benthic meifauna. This one, from the family Ectinosomatidae, is a new genus and species. Microphotograph taken in a Leica confocal microscope.

Fresh from the press - a new #copepod species from Roadside cave in #Bermuda. This is female we got during our 2016 expeditions. The manuscript includes a downloadable 3D model! Thanks to Giovanni Mussini from @magdalenecollege.bsky.social for taking the lead!

Tetragoniceps bermudensis sp. nov. (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Tetragonicipitidae) is described based on an ovigerous female collected from Roadside Cave, a tidally influenced anchialine cavern in Bermu...

Biggest surprise was finding Copepoda within Allotriocarida (rather than sister to Thecostraca or Malacostraca). As a copepod person, I did not expect this at all and spent 2+ years doing reanalyses to be more confident

The 5th International Workshop on Symbiotic Copepoda was undoubtably a major success! We couldn’t have asked for better hosts at CEMACS, Malaysia. We miss you already!

Are there any Copepod experts on here? I accidentally cultured some from a puddle I collected water from, and want to try and ID them. Photos coming sometime next week!

For abomination crustacean #InsertAnInvert2024, the featured parasitic species all look weird but it turns out they cover the entire diversity of crustaceans with a common ancestor over 500 million years ago 🧪🦑
