After 110 years on Cornmarket, stationery shop W.H. Smith has been rebranded T.G. Jones – a name invented by investment company Modella Capital, which acquired the high street shops in June. The Abingdon branch was renamed in August. www.oxfordhistory.org.uk/cornmarket/e...

Extinction Rebellion have dressed as Suffragettes on Cornmarket in protest against prison sentences for climate activists. Sixteen protestors from Just Stop Oil are appearing against imprisonment next week. XR Oxford say that the Suffragettes were ‘also political prisoners derided in their day’.

There’s a shop in Oxford on Ship Street which, for ages, had a handpainted a-frame board out on the cornmarket directing people to No 1 Sheep Street, which in context was absolutely an ESL error but it made me smile every time because five hundred years ago, that was indeed sheep street
What I also love are the businesses (e.g. Army Street Florists) that flatly refuse to change their names just because the street has been renamed (Cesar Chavez St., San Francisco).
