Steve Costigan was created by Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan—you know the guy) and appeared in twenty stories in American pulps from 1929 to 1934.

“Sailor Steve” Costigan is a brawling boxer, only 6'0" and 190 pounds and unschooled in technical boxing.

Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) created many characters in his brief career: Conan the Barbarian, King Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, Red Sonya of Rogatino, Steve Costigan, & Breckenridge Elkins.

Keith Costigan and Mo Edu have been full of praise for Timo Werner in his first start, but he’s frankly been getting his lunch eaten by Cody Baker.

The main exceptions to this are Howard's comedic characters. The boxer Sailor Steve Costigan and the mountain man Breckinridge Elkins (and their alter egos like Dennis Dorgan and Pike Bearfield) are neither as erudite nor as introspective as Conan & co., and often slow enough to get bamboozled.

Not only is this Bama/Rockwell/Wyeth level painting, it's of a Robert E. Howard character; the merchant marine adventurer Steve Costigan

Cheers to @schweizercomics.bsky.social for putting me on to the Sailor Steve Costigan stories by pre-Conan Robert E Howard. Great fight descriptions, fun narratorial voice and genuinely funny!

A scene I think about a lot these days is when Billy Costigan asks "what's wrong with taking him on any one of the million fucking felonies" anyway so what's been going on today, anything?

I honestly think a lot of people end up watching and thinking “RIP Henry Hill, Billy Costigan, et al but I’m built different”
It is funny how many viewers seem to miss that all of his crime films feature the protagonists ending up pathetic and miserable for the last quarter of the film though. Do people just turn it off or get drunk before then?
