It's nice to see that the European Union is pretty much going countercurrent to what the US are doing right now. There's balance at least, it's not just all gloom.

A second strategy is managing those feet - preventing freezing using a countercurrent heat exchange system, nicely explained in this fantastic illustration by Dr. Heather Hinam (4/6) #birds
The countercurrent heat exchange system in their legs helps with that. By the time the blood gets to their feet, it's close to freezing. They have only tendons and keratin down there and limited nerve endings, so they have to get pretty cold before it bothers them.
