#CounterTrafficking
"It is likely to further harm the already rocky relationship between Washington and Bogota at a time when the Trump administration says countertrafficking is a top priority."

I want to know where this should have been stopped - SOUTHCOM? Its subordinate Joint Interagency Task Force South, which is in charge of countertrafficking in the Caribbean?

I know very little about the military, but I would hope/assume someone would verify statutory authority to attack.
Potentially significant point here: Trump is immune from prosecution, but none of the other people involved with this are, including the relevant Navy personnel.

Members of the US military have a *legal obligation* to refuse illegal orders. I'd be concerned if I were them.
The @nytimes.com ran a whole story about the murder of Venezuelan civilians on a ship as if it were a military matter and we were at war with Venezuela. It was a crime. The story never mentioned that Trump ordered a criminal act and the Navy followed an illegal order. This is a major event.

Even if there was some legitimate reason for involvement like countertrafficking or interdiction, the very premise is so repulsing that *even the most well-intentioned people would also have the same incentive as the traffickers to stay silent, even if merely for different reasons.*

There even could have been legitimate purposes like interdiction and countertrafficking that got corrupted in the dark and without sufficient accountability (bc who wants to be at all responsible for allowing the trafficking of minors, even if the goal is to identify and bring down ringleaders?).

CNN: Directive from Trump's Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pause nearly all US aid has brought scores of programs–from global health to emergency shelter to countertrafficking–to a halt. One humanitarian official predicted that if the suspension continues for two more weeks, thousands could die.
