Iran has never renounced Khomeini's stated goal of obliterating Israel and its people. It has also pursued acquisition of nuclear weapons despite sanctions, counterproliferation actions, and the political and economic costs. Not saying these strikes are justified, but this is part of the context.

This is one of my lifelong issues. Everything from the physics to the engineering to the moral responsibilities of scientists to what to do if a nuke hits New York City to counterproliferation. And to the ticking clock, and how the lessons are all pointing us in terrible directions
