For years, victims of crime in the UK have faced significant barriers when trying to access court records, largely due to prohibitive costs and bureaucratic processes. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has acknowledged the problem and is now trialling an in-house AI system, Justice Transcribe, to produce court transcriptions more affordably. The pilot, overseen by the courts and tribunals service, will evaluate the AI’s accuracy before any nationwide rollout. Victims’ groups and legal experts have stressed that access to transcripts is vital for understanding proceedings, supporting recovery, and challenging potential miscarriages of justice. Since 2012, court stenographers were replaced by audio recordings, which private companies then transcribe at often exorbitant fees. While the AI system could make transcripts cheaper, concerns exist regarding accuracy and AI hallucinations, where generated text appears plausible but is incorrect. Legal professionals emphasise the need for human oversight to avoid distorting justice. There is no set timeline for the pilot or full implementation, reflecting caution amid potential risks, similar to previous issues with DNA or facial recognition technologies. The initiative reflects an attempt to balance technological innovation with fairness and transparency in the justice system.
