Feeding everybody at the veggie farm we manage 🌞 Just a cover crop of sunflowers, partially for biomass, mostly for fun #flowers #bloomscrolling #organic #farming #covercrop #pollinators

Not a compelling photo, but demonstrates the uneven distribution of a white clover covercrop down these trial rows as it battles for dominance vs. mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris).

We’ve also dumped a metric tonne of vermicompost into these planting sites, which has made a huge impact over time. 🌱🌍🪱

Covercrop emerging from mulched ground in a young #avocado orchard seems like an appropriate picture for #WorldSoilDay

#SixOnSaturday is shockingly #November1st it was a week of sleeping #bees on #flowers late season #turtle roaming the newly mulched garden I ate a freshly picked persimmon, red clover covercrop sprouting, pineapple sage is crazy and camellias blooming

Mowing the covercrop close to the young #avocado trees to reduce competition for water, leaving the row centers to build more biomass. Hope and Roscoe approve.

Summer #covercrop building #soilhealth capturing #carbon and feeding insects, let’s hope our current @teamlabouruk.bsky.social will start to appreciate the benefits and #BackBritishFarming

2/3" rain overnight. Great start for the recently sown #covercrop. 2 more days of gentle rain will make for happy #avocados.

Where did the winter #covercrop go? It's still there, but after mowing it is acting as a mulch, protecting the soil from wind and sun, preserving water for the #avocados.

This is either an Anatolian Shepherd pic or a covercrop pic. Interpretation is up to you.

To conserve top soil and soil moisture, we dont disk until there's enough rain forecast to establish a #covercrop. Looks good for Tuesday, so we're getting started among the young #avocado trees.

Taking a break from #avocado pics to acknowledge our hard working soil. Mulch, #covercrop, and time make it what it is. And that makes avocados.

Covercrop: grown with the winter rain protects against the summer sun (even if both rain and sun show up in spring)

This is a cute picture of new farmdog Keiko, but I can't ignore the dry, windswept ground. I'd really rather see 3 or 4 inch tall #covercrop in January, but that takes rain.

#covercrop and grass pathways. The cover crop is brighter green. It will be cut and turned in to the soil to feed it and the life within #smallfarmlife #regenerativefarm #soil

The power of compost. The cover crop on the left is the same species as despite it being a lighter green and shorter than the wheat growing out a compost pile #compost #covercrop #smallfarmlife #organicfarming #regenerativefarm #soilhealth #microbiome #soil

Triticale is an edible grain that we grow in a covercrop mix. It's not harvested. It's job is to create biomass, feeding the soil, not us. 'Cuz a planet's got to eat. Happy Earth Day.

Pearl and Ludwig supervise potentially the last irrigation of the year. With a decent chance of rain for the next week, we're prepping to seed the #covercrop Friday.

This winter's covercrop seed is waiting for a good rain forecast. We've mulched heavily among the young #avocado trees: will be planting this mix where the mulch is thin or not applied. We like mixes. We can't rotate crops but once a generation, but can rotate plant species through the covercrop.
