Another busy two-hour advice surgery in Springburn today.

It was also great to see restoration work underway on the magnificent drinking fountain that was first commissioned in 1902 to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Cowlairs Co-operative Society. Well done Mandy McIntosh for leading the project!

Built at Derby in 1956, this two-car DMU was converted into a battery electric multiple-unit at Cowlairs works, with lead acid batteries and Siemens electrical equipment. Seen at Aberdeen, it waits to depart for its journey along the highly scenic 43½ mile Deeside branch to Ballater in April 1958.

Interestingly, the rope-haulling of trains up the Cowlairs incline may well have provided part of the inspiration for Glasgow's subway system, which was powered by a cable-hauled system from its inception in the 1890s until it was electrified in the 1930s.

Really chuffed. My walk. I reached northern portal of Glasgow Queen Street tunnel (Cowlairs Tunnel) you can see the panoramic spot top of this pic. You have to wade through flytipping in Pinkston and, evidently, not many people are mad enough to urban explore [picture credit Thomas Nugent/Geograph]

Other similar ones existed in other parts of Glasgow, including Shettleston, Kinning Park, Cowlairs, Thornliebank and St George Cross and in the east end. This, in turn, led to the creation of the Scottish Wholesale Cooperative Society to supply goods to all these individual societies.

It was part of Scotland's first intercity railway line connecting its two largest cities (Glasgow and Edinburgh), and the line is almost completely level until it reaches Cowlairs in the north of Glasgow.

As a result, the railway had to tunnel under it, creating a slope that was too steep for early steam traction engines to be able to climb. The solution was to install powerful stationary engines at Cowlairs at the top of this slope to haul trains up it using a hemp rope.

This incline was so steep that the locomotives of the day could not climb it, and until the early 1900s, they were hauled up it using a rope attached to a stationary steam engine at Cowlairs.

So, why did they go to all this trouble and expense when easier options were undoubtedly available?

Bloody hell!! My roots are Keppochil Rd, the next street down lol. I played on Cowlairs Park between the 2. Many relatives went to Cowlairs Railway or to the Springburn rail works. It's all flattened now, but when I go up I can still stand on the spot of my Granny's tenement. 491 Keppochill Rd lol

"At Cowlairs, I’ve heard tales of bonfires, cars that have been set ablaze and a group of dirt bike racers who’ve carved out paths that stretch over most of the 74-acre park. It’s this unofficial race track which has brought me up here.
