Disease-causing microbes in dairy include:

Listeria monocytogenes
Escherichia coli
Campylobacter jejuni
Salmonella spp
Brucella abortus
Mycobacterium bovis
Coxiella burnetti
Cryptosporidium parvum
H5N1 influenza
Hepatitis A virus
Norovirus
Coxsackievirus

Good thing FDA halted dairy testing, right?

Coxsackievirus A9 is currently the most highly elevated virus in the US right now.

It's elevated in almost every one of our 43 sites.

Today I learned that multiple studies have found Coxsackievirus B, a common childhood enterovirus, may trigger Type 1 diabetes & chronic autoimmune myocarditis in some kids. Anyone surprised?

FYI, the most elevated viruses in the US last week were once again Parechovirus 6 and Coxsackievirus A9.

Both are elevated nationwide.

National Wastewater summary from last week.

COVID is low and steady.
Rhinoviruses and Parainfluenza 3 are fading.
coxsackievirus A9 is most elevated (HFMD?)
Paraechovirus 6 is still elevated.

We performed a metagenomic sprint this week.

Samples that arrived on Tues were prepped overnight, loaded on a 10B plate Wed (25 h run), and output today.

The same summer viruses continue to surge: Parechovirus 6, Rhinovirus A54, Parainfluenzavirus 3 and Coxsackievirus A9.

The most elevated viruses by wastewater remain parechovirus 6 and coxsackievirus A9, but even those numbers are coming down.

What will be the back to school virus this year?

Long polio, long HIV, long epstein-barr, long chickenpox, long covid, and now long coxsackievirus, apparently. Wish humans had spotted this pattern earlier.

Anyone notice a lot of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) this summer? I've heard about a lot of anecdotal cases.

Based on our wastewater surveillance, I think it's being driven by Coxsackievirus A6.

Next is Coxsackievirus A9. This is another picornavirus that can cause flu-like symptoms, rashes, and other things.

It was pretty high last Fall too, but is seeming to have a second wind this summer in some places.

Out today in @cp-cellreports.bsky.social! We found that coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), associated with increased risk of #T1D, infects all human pancreas cell types, not just beta cells. Great collab w/ Hubert Tse (KUMC). Led by WashU DBBS PhD student Daniel Veronese-Paniagua www.cell.com/cell-reports...
Coxsackievirus B infection invokes unique cell-type-specific responses in primary human pancreatic islets
Veronese-Paniagua et al. demonstrate that coxsackievirus B3 infects all primary human islet cell types and elicits distinct cell-type-specific transcriptional and mitochondrial responses. They identif...
