#CraftConf
Hello from #CraftConf Budapest! As always, I'll be doing my best to liveskeet all the talks I attend (until my computer runs out of battery, which happens earlier every year)

Keynote speaker: "Slow Down to Speed up", @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com

Meta had a token leaderboard and AI usage was part of promotion evaluations. Devs would use AI for EVERYTHING, including review and making documentation. Then Meta announced layoffs, and devs tried to keep their jobs by... using AI more.

Slop buries all the remaining engineers who care. More, longer pull requests, most devs are dying of code fatigue. Those who still do manual review don't get rewarded in performance reviews. Many developers are burning out and leaving

Most companies focus on AI for individual productivity. Lot of opporunity for applying AI to teams and systems, like reducing friction and helping with learning. But this takes lots of time and massive investment.

Tokenmaxxing and tooling addiction: pressure to look productive. Bad.

According to @simonwillison.net , there was a phase change in Nov 2025. Teams using agents now ship 5x code (disregarding quality) than those that don't. Cursor users produce 2.5x code since last year. ...PRs are 3x bigger, and 40% of AI code is now merged without human review.

Codex is now regularly used to improve itself. Cursor all-in on agents and makes you not wear shoes indoors, also now training their own models.

Google: everything is custom-built and integrated with AI. Everything uses Gemini, though, which is worse than Codex or Claude Code.

Now in the "Model Drift" talk, Barry O'Reilly, #CraftConf

Most approaches of software like Dijkstra's separation of concerns and OOP are about keeping the model still, but the model needs to change with the business environment

We should see the world as "attractors", like getting too many customers on black friday, getting few customers on a hot day, getting new competitors, market dips, etc.

Software has attractors; architecture is about controlling the attractors. Software can make attractors im/possible

Day two of #CraftConf! Gonna try skeeting from Edge in hopes it doesn't kill my battery as much as Firefox. I just got in a couple minutes late for @kentbeck.com 's "Forest & Desert & Genie". About how AI unlocks so much creativity but also has so many challenges

It can be hard to do this because it's not how managers want us to work.

One troubling trend: "single-player mode", where teams shrink to one programmer. This loses interaction between humans, which is critical to engineering.

After giving my talk, I'm now ducking into a piece of generating F# from AI Specs. Small room, there's like 12 people here. Looks like sharepoint, sitelets, typed endpoints, type-safe templating. So far nothing about generating F# from AI specs yet.

So architecture should be a set of flows, not a set of objects. Then we can use FMEA and STRIDE

Use Residuality to stress an naive architecture "until it can survive an unknown business attractor"

Then make architectural descisions about the code that affects all call chains

I'm super happy to be part of #CraftConf 🧡 🙌

I will be speaking about #EngineeringStrategy from a new point of view, collecting all the personal and collaborations learnings from the past two years.

I promise I won't have more than 120 slides this time 🙏 😅

#CraftConf-on összegyűjtöttem a szükséges pecséteket, így járt egy O'REILLY könyv ajándékba.

Where does this come from? The first edition of "Pragmatic Programmer". 2nd edition walks it back, "we did a poor job of explaining what we meant". The principle is clear, but since the book was about programming, readers assumed it was about copy and pasting lines of code.

Liskovs ADT mixes with D.L. Parnas's 1972 paper on modules, which is "patient ONE" to use information hiding. Not the original. Modules should hide info from other modules.

Patient 0 was his paper "Infomration distribution aspects of design methodology". This paper was about PEOPLE. #CraftConf

The big weakenss of AI CODERS is deskilling. You have to always try understanding before you ask an AI, and compare your understanding to it, and look for weaknesses. AI tempts you to not put in the work, you gotta put in the work
