People, young and old, came to the witch for directions.

"I seek adventure."

"I seek wisdom."

"I need a place to feel at home."

"I feel like I need to cry, but I can't."

The witch listened, and told all where to find what they sought.

And the local library thrived.

Long ago, dragons rose up against the gods. After a long war, the dragons were defeated.

As punishment, the dragons were split, literally, and spread across the world. Their diminished selves seek their lost parts.

Once the right nine lives of cats meet, they'll reform a dragon.

"The Human's world ends soon," said the cat.

"Again?" said the dog.

"They are fond of endings and beginnings. Even if nothing changes."

The dog whined.

"Same procedure as last year?" said the cat.

"Please."

The cat lay on the dog's head and purred, muffling the fireworks.

"Who sent you?"

The intruder froze.

"You haven't come to seek gold or glory for yourself," the dragon said.

It was a short, sad, familiar story.

"Do you want to stay," the dragon asked, "with the others?"

"Others?"

The dragon called for his adopted children.

"I hoard family."

"Yield!" the knight called, sword raised.

"And if I do?" the dragon asked.

"I will ask a boon."

"What boon?"

"Let my horse ride you."

"What?"

"I have tried to tell him of the joy I feel riding a powerful steed, and have it go where I wish. Can you show him?"

"Ah. Then, I yield."

The witch woke up to see a ghostly cat standing on her chest.

"All right," she muttered. "Take me there."

The ghost led her to the forest, where, under a shrub, she found the cat.

It was badly injured; eight ghosts of lost lives watched her heal it.

"Only one left, now."

"Mrew."

"You've been chosen," the spirit said.

"What?"

"Save the world, make it kinder, cleaner, safer."

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"We chose everyone."

When I gathered the courage to tell my mother that I was her daughter, not her son, she simply said:
"I have suspected so, ever since you were born."

"Why?"

"I was cursed when expecting you. A demon would take my firstborn son."

"And?"

"It came, looked at you and said 'Nah'."

"You promised me to whoever killed the dragon!" the princess said.

"But-" the king said.

"And she did!"

"But she's a dragon too!"

"And hot."

"As a knight," the king said, "it is your duty to kill dragons."

"Very well, my liege," the knight said. "Um. May I ask why?"

"Because they hoard wealth without sharing, and people live in fear of their capricious moods."

"Very well, my liege," the knight said and drew his sword.

Once a year, the swordmaster saw students seeking advice on other weapons. At the end of the long line of people holding axes, spears, and tools, a girl stood, her hands empty.
"What is your weapon?"
"Anger. Anger and spite."
The swordmaster smiled. "Finally, an advanced pupil!"
