Here's a quick write trying to capture some thoughts after a chat with a friend yesterday about what the future might hold.

![crossed lines
the yellowed paper displays a map
no 'here be treasure'
a different kind of fantasy
inked in blue and unfamiliar green
once there was land east of here
not water as far as the eye can see
this island vantage point we look from
a thin spit of ground
once was hilltop
contours falling away below
down to rolling plains
fields of grain
roads linking hamlets and villages
they say on some evenings you'll hear them
bells tolling from the drowned churches
dozens of them, maybe hundreds
before the seas rose
before the icebergs melted
the storms whipping in
dropping deluges in the long wet season
so the powerful built bunkers
in the highest places
where water drains downwards
like everything else
pouring down the social orders
leaving those least equipped
behind to weather the future
