And finally, broom crowberry! Another rare plant, which is found in in fire-prone pine barrens in Nova Scotia (and also rocky ledges along the coast). Fire maintains early successional habitat and promotes seed germination. #nativeplants

I went berry picking at Arctic Valley with a large group on Wednesday. Thursday we cleaned the berries, mostly crowberries/moss berries, some blueberries and a few cranberries/red berries. Blueberries were sorted out to make modern akutaq and the rest were made into easy crowberry pie.

I also have a small cutting of rock crowberry, which is a neat species because it’s only found along the coast in Nova Scotia on exposed headlands in northern Cape Breton and the Chebucto peninsula (where Halifax is located).

Crowberry (empetrum nigrum)!
A species in the heather family ericaceae, found alongside the common heather and scottish highland cattle in the dunes of North Holland!

I haven't but I will now!

I went down a bog rabbit hole when I was researching hikes in the Olympics and found the Crowberry Bog. I had no idea how many types there were, how important they were, and I even read about the history of peat harvesting.

This book looks very up my alley.

What about deep purplish-reds that you could get from some berries (e.g. bilberry and crowberry)?

Were they not used/not popular then?
