“This is what crowd out looks like.”

Right, the practical issue is "crowdout", whether it's schoolwork, in person socialization, physical activity, etc. True for adults too but not-fully-developed brains make it trickier.
I am going to do some light defense of Lorenz. Although I think most would agree phone/social media is too prominent in our lives the truth is that there is not a ton of research suggesting “phone addiction” or other diagnoses related to phone use is real. Haidt et al really overstate their case.

Samsun Naher sharing new work at #ASHEcon2026 - did Medicaid expansion crowd out private coverage for Mexican Americans?

She found expansion increased Medicaid coverage by 9.%, decreases private coverage by 2.8% (~30% crowdout)

The insurance industry is calling the CrowdStrike Falcon disaster “The CrowdOut Event”.

CyberCube estimates non-F500 insured losses from the CrowdStrike ~= $400mn - $1.5bn USD — “the largest affirmative cyber event yet”.

On ”International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development,” I’ll take the liberty of posting this experimental study of “mandated volunteering,” showing sizable crowdout effects: doi.org/10.1080/0003...
Mandated volunteering: an experimental approach
This study employs a novel experimental paradigm to examine crowdout effects in volunteering. Using a framework modelled upon money donation experiments, we examine the impact of ‘forced’ volunteer...

i wonder how easy it'd be to build a bare-bones congestion simulator with waymo adoption

something like given:
- average queue time
- fraction of adopters
- % crowdout of public transit

what the number of waymos in a city is / hour. maybe change whether waymos can park or need to drive constantly
Elon being a bullshit artist has caused a lot of people to not really realize that self-driving cars are real and are here. Rich people will probably have cars they can safely get behind the wheel of while drunk or send home without them in 10-15 yrs, the rest of us in maybe 30.
everybodys gonna be mad at me for this but if they offer it in my city at some point i will probably take a short journey via a waymo just because i think its kinda neat in isolation

We derive the most powerful recentered IVs for formula treatments & propose an algorithm for approximating them

This approach yields *huge* power gains, relative to conventional simulated IV, when estimating Medicaid crowdout effects

There's still content on ESPN at the nerd/jock crossover even! But there is crowdout by shoutier stuff...

Also, like, the US is not really governable because nobody in the House, Senate, or White House ever wants to make any tough decisions on taxes and spending.

Once every 20 years Democrats will do *something* b/c of crowdout, which means we're due in 2030 or so.

🚨🚨🚨 Medicaid expansion provided insurance to millions of Americans... but 43% of them would have had coverage from elsewhere. #ACA #Crowdout #Medicaid
