i like standup comedy but i hate how crowdwork has become the main kind of standup.

nearly EVERY comic does some form of crowdwork now when prepandemic it was a specific niche certain comics did
there are some crowdwork heavy comics (over half their set sometimes) but i tend to avoid when they come thru town

At the front of the gig was a stag do. They despised me and kept yelling "TAXI!" after all my jokes (and then laughing a lot amongst themselves). Eventually I said "why are you doing this?" (amazing crowdwork) and the alpha went "come and sit on my lap 😏"

imho its also related to the fact that folks dont know how to act in public post-lockdown. more people act out, and likely standups use crowdwork as a mean of maintaining control in the room

its a skill to pick out the interesting person in a crowd and find what makes them tick
