We went for a walk in Tommy Thompson Park yesterday are saw lots of tiny, very shy songbirds, many butterflies and other insects, ducks (mallards and wood ducks), swans, geese, herons, egrets, a toad, a tiny snapping turtle, a hawk, cormorants and even a mink.

The birds were tough to photograph

For a managed prairie restoration, they sure seem to be letting a lot of invasive plants run absolutely wild here. Every year I see more sweetclover, birds-foot trefoil, purple crownvetch, toadflax, great mullein, and others, but I haven't seen any visible efforts made to control any of them.

Some kind of luipne? I don't know plants all that well, honestly. Lance-leaved coreopsis Purple crownvetch. I know it's invasive, but it's still a nice looking plant.

Crownvetch -- probably planted here intentionally for soil rehab or forage for livestock when the land was farmed, but also might just be an opportunist. Hard to tell. Considered invasive in some parts of the US. One of the prettier weeds.

Fine pointed white flowers with a purple center grow on a stalk between a street and metal barricade. Moth Mullein is what my app said this was. I think it's gorgeous. Bright orange and red flowers (or maybe leaves) look like their ready for autumn. Carolina geranium or Carolina cranesbill.

American blue vervain (Verbena hastata) growing by the river. Purple loosestrife (Lythrum virgatum) growing wild. Crownvetch (Coronilla varia) growing in a patch. Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) with a bonus insect if you look closely enough.

Post-dinner walk around the pond by our house. Saw some pretty flowers. Listened to some pretty large frogs shouting at each other.
