It's also the intended purpose of Roman crucifixtion and (somewhat more extrajudicially, but by no means state-condemned) lynching. The point is to actively strip the person of humanity
For much of history, executions were deliberately public. People gathered at the gallows, and public attendance was often part of the punishment's intended function. The state wanted witnesses. It could serve as a warning and a demonstration of sovereign power. Communal judgment.
