#CryptoSystem
Alice sends Bob an encrypted message scheduling a date. Eve intercepts and decrypts the message—it used the insecure DES cryptosystem. She goes to the restaurant before Bob arrives. Eve and Alice hit it off. They go back to Alice's place and have hot & passionate lesbian sex. Happy pride everyone.

ah, i think i figured it out how they put it beyond debate: they made sure it was a cryptosystem and they could pull 18 usc 798 for it

me when someone asks me to audit the security of their cryptosystem

Many have tried to build cryptosystems out of NP-complete problems, but it repeatedly turns out that the actual instances of the problem generated by the cryptosystem are not hard in the average case.

Can we start encoding our tweets for funsies, I think I still have a RSA message cryptosystem from my cryptography class

Right up there on the systems lessons I definitely did not learn in grad school: if you can't efficiently rotate the key it's not a cryptosystem it's obfuscation and key rotation is really hard

Did I ever tell you about the Google system I had to get killed that after 4 years still couldn't rotate?

Deeply offended that my spellcheck doesn't recognize, "cryptomnesia," and suggests, "cryptosystem," instead

have you ever had an experience that would be worth the time it would take to reduce to a pithy STOP-punctuated message in capital letters and run it through a cryptosystem?
i think about this all the time

Man, I had no idea I was allowed to write a cryptosystem protocol and just say, “cryptographic details are left to the implementer.” Why has everyone been doing it the hard way?

like wdym the guy who taught the guy who invented the Rabin cryptosystem was Bibi's uncle

I literally found this out today because the Rabin cryptosystem came up in a course I'm watching

In 1640, Fermat, a magistrate by day and a mathematician by night, published his Little Theorem, essentially for fun. Building off this work 337 years later, the RSA cryptosystem was first published as a means of secure data transmission. It is the foundation of modern banking.

Doing a crypto ctf challenge for a RSA adjacent cryptosystem, and I have factors of N so I should be able to decrypt the flag but I can't and I don't know why :(

"Commander Waterhouse?" the 🇬🇧 Main Guy says, several minutes later.
On the fly, Waterhouse has been trying to invent a new cryptosystem based upon alternative systems of pronouncing words and hasn't said anything in quite a while.

But as @eschneider.bsky.social‬ says, the point of a cryptosystem is that it is very quick to encipher and decipher with the secret key, very hard to do so without (so you have invented a pestimal cryptosystem as Gerhard Frey, the guy who taught me mathematical cryptography, used to say).

(obviously they have some clever new cryptosystem based on braid groups)

Like, I want to be clear: if your cryptosystem can be bypassed with a warrant, it can and will be bypassed without one. A world in which all legal cryptosystems can be bypassed is a world in which nothing can legally be considered encrypted, only obfuscated.
