Right. I thought when I was young that everyone was going to live forever and have a kickass cyberfuture because of fiction and then I learned half of anything about the real world! But this resentment that we don't live in that world is shot through so much contemporary culture. It's sickening

Maybe I'd be more willing to believe in the cyberfuture with sentient robots roaming the streets and flying cars exploding overhead if we'd mastered "online form that works"

Battle Angel Alita rules because there are like ramen shops and Japanese signage everywhere, then you get 40 chapters in and it reveals it was set in Missouri the whole time. I like to think everywhere else in the cyberfuture is normal but the Midwest is just like that.

I for one really enjoy that each of his SpaceX X Plane XX Cyberfuture XX Super Mega Awesome X Warfighter Aircraft test flights will end in hilarious crashes that cost enough money to properly fund every K-12 school in America for a decade

I am infinitely more willing to believe that in the far cyberfuture of Japan, 20XX, that competent cybercops will have the intelligence to philosophically ruminate on the nature of the self while having hot lesbian virtual cybersex than I am willing to believe a modern US cop could tie his shoes

Snow Crash vs Neuromancer is a very funny compare/contrast to me because Gibson did basically invent what we think of as cyberpunk from whole cloth, but Neuromancer is much more prescient about what our actual cyberfuture is like (extremely dumb and loud, balkanized suburbia, a janky metaverse)

partly boils down to cyberpunk being a genre built on dated anxieties about stuff like steroids and profoundly nationalist fears of japanese dominance of US infrastructure, but I also think a lot of it comes from people failing to consider that the internet as experienced is already the cyberfuture

simon's the product of a cyberfuture vr-chat glitch that re-forms his real body into that of his avatar ✌️ its a rough transition but once he acclimates to being a physically real furry he has a pretty good time with it (save for The Horrors)

I've long held an idea that you could actually make a pretty solid "cyberpunk mercs" game in which the only actual mechanical foundation is gear bought with money. No stats, no skills, nobody gives a shit about what you have NATURALLY in the cyberfuture, if it doesn't have a price tag it's worthless
