THE CYBERRAYS ARE ROLLING IN THEIR GRAVES

The CyberRays didn't exist until just after my story in San Jose takes place, but what a cool team. I know Mega would have season tickets. #writing

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I helped found a little supporter’s group called The Rayistas. I’m very proud to have my tiny bit of women’s soccer supporterdom in this book. Thanks, Nina.

I feel like Bay FC will continue to be cursed by feeling like an generic club from a commercial unless they give themselves a cool nickname. really invoke the spirit of the CyberRays

I will always have a place in my heart for the Torrent.

But San Jose is happening, and being able to go to games easily will always win out. Long live the Seals/CyberRays/Lasers/Hammerheads/SJPWHL!

Nina Glick interviewed me for this exhibition as the co-founder of The Rayistas supporters group. My scarf is a part of this exhibition. Please go and see it.

Fun fact — the first-ever soccer game at the then-new Mile High in 2002 was a women's game!

It was a USA preseason match featuring Brandi Chastain's San Jose CyberRays vs Mia Hamm's Washington Freedom.

So perfect for the Summit to launch in this venue.
Rare air here in Denver for the #NWSL to be in a venue of this scale. It's sunny and gorgeous today, too. Spirit just walked the field, and it looks like a Rodman-Rudd TikTok is incoming from field level.

Still time for Bay FC to rebrand into the CyberRays.
By the way, that will leave Philadelphia as the only market that had teams in the WUSA and WPS but does not have a NWSL team.
Atlanta will be the #NWSL's 17th team, adding to the league's rapid expansion (@theathletic.com first reported). Atlanta has been talked about as an NWSL market on and off for nearly a decade.

U.S. professional women's soccer—and sports in general—has come along way, but let’s not forget 34,148 watched the Washington Freedom face off against the Bay Area CyberRays at RFK Stadium to kick off the WPS on April 14, 2001. That attendance would still crack the top three in the post-NWSL era.
Women's soccer has come a long way in Bay Area. When Albertin Montoya coached FC Gold Pride to 2010 WPS title, its largest crowd was 4,003. On Saturday, Montoya's Bay FC set a record for a standalone NWSL match, drawing 40,081 fans at Oracle Park.

......for those curious, that record includes ALL women's pro sport. Previous soccer records were 35,038 set by Chicago Stars + Bay FC at Wrigley Field in 2024, with the record prior to that was 34,148 at WUSA match in DC at RFK Stadium between the Washington Freedom and the Bay Area CyberRays.

I have not been back to the former Spartan Stadium in San Jose since the @sjearthquakes74.bsky.social last game at the stadium over 20 years ago. My interview about my support of #WomensSoccer provided the chance to have an emotional reunion. #WUSA #USWNT #Cyberrays #SJSU

I’m being interviewed for my involvement in women’s soccer supporterdom.
While looking at old photos I came across this gem of me, doing a pre-game warmup with the #Cyberrays at Spartan Stadium (I won a contest).
I thought I looked like an orange Godzilla attacking a fleeing group of citizens.

24 years ago today, April 14, 2001 the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) played its inaugural game: Washington Freedom vs. Bay Area CyberRays at RFK Stadium in front of 34,148. The league lasted for 3 years, but the impact & effects of it are still present in women’s pro soccer today.
