But wait, says the detail-noticing pupfish lover among you...

That art is the Ash Meadows Amargosa pupfish -- Cyprinodon nevadensis.

The devils hole pupfish are Cyprinodon diabolis.

No, I'm not That Jerk and did not say anything 😆. Instead we enjoyed a moment of shared pupfish appreciation. 🐟

Feeling like it's officially #pupfishweek, so here's another one of my favorite videos but this time from the field!

I took this video of a cutely colorful male #Cyprinodon beltrani while swimming in less than a meter of water in Laguna Chichancanab during our last field season with … 🧵👇

You'll be happy to hear that the endangered Devil's Hole Pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis, survived the Kamchatka quake with minimal disturbance. Their one habitat in Death Valley National Park is famous for reacting to earthquakes with sloshing water in the pool. 🧪🌍⚒️ #TeamFish

okay... so this is something that nobody really cares about. but. The pupfish in Webfishing depicts a Devil's Hole Pupfish(?), BUT the scientific name is for the Bighead Pupfish.
funny oversight!

New preprint from the last portion of my PhD! Despite low masked load, we found evidence for strong inbreeding depression in Devils Hole pupfish. The reason? A recessive lethal haplotype that causes a heart defect among developing embryos. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Long-term small effective population size, inbreeding, and a recessive lethal haplotype drive premature death in the endangered Devils Hole pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis)
As anthropogenic habitat fragmentation and population decline accelerate globally, growing numbers of species face compounding demographic and genetic threats to long-term survival. Many populations a...

Approx 10,000 years ago, large lakes and rivers were common in Nevada. These pupfish occur naturally only within Devils Hole, left behind as the climate warmed and the waters began to dry up, recede, and separate, isolating species in and around small bodies of water.

Sheepshead Minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus) are not true minnows, but are pupfish (Cyprinodontidae), a type of killifish (Cyprinodontiformes). Unlike true minnows (Cyprinidae) that lack teeth, killifish have teeth and are sometimes called "toothcarps", which is evident in this specimen 🐟🐡🐙🦈🧪🐋🐠

As a result of reading the relevant Wikipedia page I now imagine some individual Devil's Hole Pupfish developing esoteric conspiracy theories about how human scientists are going to "Great Replace" them with hybrids cross-bred with Cyprinodon nevadensis with bigger pelvic fins and greater fecundity.
