#Cytokinetic
New from our lab in @jcellsci.bsky.social: the earliest cell divisions help build the #zebrafish left-right organizer. #Cytokinetic bridges recruit actin and mark where rosettes form. Block early #divisions and the organ stays attached to the surface layer. Timing matters. doi.org/10.1242/jcs.264896
Mitotically driven cytoskeletal reorganization governs zebrafish left–right organizer detachment from enveloping layer and lumen morphogenesis

The proteasome promotes cytokinetic abscission by relieving an Aurora B-dependent inhibition of ESCRT-III dynamics
Dibsy et al. show that proteasomal degradation of the Aurora B kinase is required for cytokinetic abscission in human cells. Aurora B degradation reduces the phosphorylation of its substrate, CHMP4C, at the intercellular bridge, which in turn promotes the ESCRT-III polymer dynamics required for cytokinetic abscission.

Interesting paper, although if I'm going to be nit-picky--SF3B1 does not have catalytic activity (it is a RNA binding protein/protein scaffold). In addition, potential non-splicing roles for SF3B1 have been found elsewhere, e.g.,in histone pre-mRNA maturation

The abscission checkpoint pauses the progression of cytokinetic abscission at the intercellular bridge when various checkpoint-sustaining errors are sensed. A unique cytoplasmic organelle, the absciss...

Happy #MicroscopyMonday!
Walter Wanyoike, an undergrad in the lab, caught some really cool cytokinetic mishaps! Cytokinesis is the last step of cell division, where the daughter cells pinch apart. The 1st cell divides into 3, and the 2nd cell tries and tries but doesn't quite get there.
