WASHINGTON -- American officials were startled by a suggestion by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's foreign policy adviser that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump could have achieved a "revolution" if more people had joined.

"The right of revolution is written into the Declaration of Independence," Takashi Kawakami said in a recently posted interview with the Daily Cyzo, a digital publication. "This is why, watching it, I asked myself, 'Has a revolution finally occurred?'"

"Very disturbing," "unreal" and "horrifying" were some reactions shared by U.S. government officials with Nikkei Asia on Sunday night after they learned about the comment.

Kawakami was pointing to the opening words of the 1776 declaration, which states that "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government."

Kawakami's words on the alliance have also raised eyebrows in Washington.

If Trump wins Tuesday's presidential election, it will be an opportunity for Japan to "finally become independent," Kawakami told the Daily Cyzo.

Given Trump's "America First" mantra, he will have little interest in U.S.-Japan or U.S.-South Korea relations, Kawakami said.

"Japan will have to conduct its own foreign policy," he continued. To strengthen Japan's defense, Japan should not depend solely on the U.S., "but find a skillful way to manage the power balance with China, Russia and North Korea," he said.

"This should be a golden opportunity for Japan," Kawakami noted. "We can take back the initiative and become a truly independent country."
