František Kupka (Czech, 1871-1957) :
Untitled, 1912

oil on canvas
54.61 × 50.17 cm | 21.5 × 19.75 in

National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

Further info in the alt text 👇
The Early Abstract Studies (c. 1912–1914): During this critical period, Kupka discarded conventional perspective to experiment with motion, color theory, and cosmic light. Notable pastels, drypoints, and etchings from this timeframe are preserved at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Many of these served as foundational, iterative drafts for his monumental masterwork, Amorpha: Fugue in Two Colors.

In a wild, windy landscape, an emaciated, skeletal woman with a tattered gown and greenish skin points pitifully towards a lake, as if to indicate where she died.

Well, if you're going to call up blazing demons, no wonder we're all suffering from heat waves. Careless bastard. (The artwork's by Jaroslav Panuska.)

Thank you to everyone who contributed to another fearfully good #PhantomsFriday. Here's another by Janoslav-Panuska for your gruesome enjoyment.

I'm excited to share that I’ll have my little bird corner at the Open Art Fest in Prague, Czech Republic, taking place on September 27th – 28th, 2025.

I’ll be bringing both originals and prints with me.

I’m really looking forward to meeting fellow art and nature lovers! #czechart #prague #artevent

Coming out of a stomach flu (india) tried to keep the painting up with a oil sketch of my bedroom. Came out looking like a Ladybird book painting.
