Even the worst of the military's history didn't have full methodical investigations into medical history of thousands of troops for being gay. DADT ended the proactive investigations that had been standard prior to it being enacted.

The DADT repeal took ENDA's place as the 2010 gay rights bill—just in time for a court case to throw out DADT anyway. The DADT repeal, of course, didn't cover trans people. (Though in his second term, Obama did extend it to trans people…with executive action…which Trump rescinded in his first term.)

Again, just how many folks don't realize that DADT was the compromise after attempts to allow LGBT folks to serve openly ran aground. It was so much worse before DADT. It sucked but it was the necessary first step toward striking the ban wholesale.

It's the old gender trap from DADT. If you are too masculine looking, you must be gay/trans. If you're too feminine looking, you're not serious enough to be in the military.
Eventually its gonna just be the excuse to turf all female enlisted, isn't it?

This is a drum I've beat intermittently for years. Everyone remembers the Clinton who had his hand forced by losing Congress for the first time in decades, not the Clinton who came into office pushing universal healthcare, a proto-carbon tax, & gays serving openly (not DADT) in the military.
For the US version of this, I have been listening to this book about the Clinton presidency, kind of expecting a general critique of neoliberalism. Instead, they've unearthed Clinton's ambitious plans to reorganize the US economy in a more progressive direction, and how it died on the rocks.

The guy who presided over DADT?? The guy who put almost ten BILLION in 1997 dollars toward prisons??? They think we reminisce about *that* guy?? My top priority at the time was Space Jam!

I mean the thing is defense contractors figured out back in the 90s under DADT that there was a pretty steady stream of LGBTQ+ people either getting kicked out of the military or leaving on their own because they weren't comfortable and those people already had security clearances and training.
I'm surprised defense contractors even employ trans people, I would imagine their leadership would be highly conservative. Especially with the current presidential administration seeing trans people as a threat to civilization.
