#DADUs
Seattle is killing off DADUs unless you have an alley!

Being able to build in the rear yard was how DADUs were possible. If you need a 15 foot setback most DADUs will not work!!!

Need a fix before the one seattle plan vote!

DADUs on nonconforming lots passes unanimously on third reading!

Thank you to the young, growing family that brought this to my attention.

The City of Issaquah just notched another housing reform in its belt for 2026, illustrating how fast a council and a mayor aligned on the issue can move. Tonight's approved bill allows for self-certification of DADUs - making Issaquah the first city in the state to implement HB 1353.

DADUs are a thing, yes, but cottage housing is total fantasy in Seattle. Minimum lot size is basically an acre.

Pretty sure orcas, being pod mammals that live in intergenerational groups would support mother-in-law dadus.
The fight over the alleged impact of building more housing in Seattle on Southern Resident Killer Whales is still chugging along, with a big push this week to get the city to stop fighting an appeal at the state court of appeals.

But the Comp Plan is passed - the appeal IS moot!

2/4) the three pack SFR+ADU+DADUs are a perfect example of less expensive housing being produced by the market. While yes, they are more expensive than the run-down house that got demolished and the sale prices seem nuts, but ADUs and DADUs are the least expensive ownership option in Seattle.

Excited about the three new families that get to live in my neighborhood thanks to ADUs and DADUs.

here are some of the permutations i'm looking at for 5k sf lots...

lot coverage: 2000-2,500 sf (40-50%)
Max FAR: 1.2

A and B: semi-detached 4-6 plex PABs
C: 4-6plex PABs set to front/sides
D: 4-plex at front/side lot. 2 DADUs on alley.
E. 3 rowhomes + 2 DADUs
F & G: 4-6plex w/ mayor's setbacks

for what is worth, within 100yds of my house, there are at least 13 new ADUs and DADUs, and I feel like I can be pretty satisfied that the advocacy work I did from 2009-19 helped build these new homes.

. @sandrafornash.bsky.social explicitly speaking for the renters/young people/multigenerational households that couldn’t come support a bill that would help them by legalizing more DADUs

Kevés szürreálisabb élményben volt részem, mint az ovis szülők-nevelők bálja:
- ovis kis széken, menzás tányérból esszük a rozé kacsamellet😬
- ittas szülők, partikázó óvónénik🫠
- dadus néni keverte nekem az aperolt ✨️✨️✨️👌
- tombolán megnyertem a fődíjat 🥳
Természetesen jövőre is megyünk.

A nuance we didn't have space to dive into:

~40% of new units in Belmont-Hillsboro since 2010 are detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs).

Most DADUs are used as bonus space, guest suites, etc. rather than rented on the open market.

The number of "true" housing units is down ~100 since 2010.

Meanwhile at the Everett City Council, holding a hearing tonight on its Comp Plan: a commenter is complaining about the construction of two DADUs in her neighborhood.

"It will be impossible to be thought of as a desirable place to live with these oddball structures causing high-density problems."
April 17, 2025 at 2:14 AM
“The new law is intended to significantly reduce permit timelines for detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs) as city leaders advance a broad program intended to open the door to quicker housing production in Issaquah.”

DADUs are generally super fun to design. This 1000sf split level design features a big porch, vaulted living and bedroom spaces, plus a garage.

some interesting stuff here.

i'll first note that the condos in the 2020-2024 section aren't condos in the traditional sense (units in a multifamily building) - but rather condo-ized ADUs and DADUs.

I just heard the same, that this provision will get fixed before it kills off DADUs
Hearing this is getting cleaned up when the council passes the final version of updated neighborhood residential zoning on December 16.

I do not care that homeowners are concerned about 2 bedroom DADUs. My god.
December 5, 2025 at 4:19 AM
49. pre-approved DADUs are a gimmick.

at best it's a handshake to connect an owner and an architect/builder.
