Feeling OK about using her first name at the start of any sentence to key her in to what follows
whether that be a spoken
environmental
or physical connection

Sometimes
reflecting guessed emotions back to mum
helped her feel understood
that she mattered
even when I guessed wrong

Seeing the relief on her face when she feels understood
is pure gold

Sometimes
apologising when I got mum's cues wrong may have helped ease her feelings of guilt as I know she used to feel she was a burden

Who knows
she may still feel that way sometimes
so "I'm sorry" may still help lift some of that weight
