#DBConnect
Ooh, @posit.co's Positron is no longer in beta as of this week(!), and it recently added support for DuckDB databases in the Connections Pane positron.posit.co/connections-... - any db connection you add with {connections} shows up there—this is magical! #rstats

tbl(
DBI::dbConnect(...),
dbplyr::in_catalog(__, __, __)
) |> ...

Applies to more than just Snowflake, though!

What's more offensive is that Snowflake goes Database > Schema (the hell?) > Table

Using all the tips, the correct syntax for a new db connection would be:

con <- dbConnect(duckdb::duckdb(), dbname = here::here("db", cfg$dbName), read_only = TRUE)

getting ready to read in 30000 csv files

the way that namespaced functions get automatically translated to SQL if the package author's support that function translation... is weird magic

con <- DBI::dbConnect(duckdb::duckdb())
dbplyr::translate_sql(stringr::str_trim(x), con = con)
#> LTRIM(RTRIM(x))

invisible(con <- DBI::dbConnect(...))

I haven't done fancy big data stuff, but I recently used it for DB testing. I developed a data pipeline that queried a secure state elections MySQL database, but I didn't have access to it, so I replicated the schema for testing the pipeline locally

You could also write wrapper functions for the DBI functions which open and close the connection, along the lines of this. read_duckdb <- function(q) {
con <-dbConnect(...)
on.exit(dbDisconnect(con))
dbGetQuery(q)
}

I find it tiresome setting up environments, importing a rack of modules, just to try and remember a load of Queryset methods. I used a dbConnect function years ago, & now I'm very happy I can stick SQL into #rstats base. I know I could just sql but I'd still have to open R to make pretty pictures.

If they're familiar with dplyr, you can plug into it using a DBI::dbConnect and hit it that way.

I shudder at the thought of opening a csv that large on its own, even if `data.table::fread` or `arrow::read_csv_arrow` go brrrrr

My friend, have you heard about my new lord and savior, duckdb?

library(duckdb)
library(tidyverse)
con <- dbConnect(duckdb(), dbdir = 'mydata.duckdb', read_only = FALSE)
dbExecute(con, "CREATE VIEW 'tbl' AS SELECT * from 'data.csv'")
df <- tbl(con, 'tbl')

Seemless integration via dbplyr. Fast AF.

[Shortly after release, the hack was deleted off of DBConnect, no one bothered to reupload it and it quickly fell off the face of the Earth.]
[...though, if you were to find it, it's a very enjoyable experience. But, there's a softlock at the ICE PALACE section of Dragonblazers III.]

Nach mehreren vergeblichen Versuchen habe ich mit dem Paket RMySQL endlich geschafft, R mit meiner Datenbank zu verbinden:

con <- dbConnect(
MySQL(),
dbname = "[datenbankname]",
host = "localhost",
user = "[user]"
password = "[passwort]"
)
