The first panel are addressing the question "How did we get here?"
Great insights on environmental communication, (lack of) political courage, energy poverty and just transitions.

'We must have the audacity to question self-serving narratives'. Our President challenged the normalisation of war, the emissions caused by ongoing conflicts, and the obscene profits being made on large-scale death and suffering. #DCUClimate2026

There is a palpable buzz in the room now as we wait for the next speaker at #DCUClimate2026!

Catherine Connolly will be coming in to give the presidential address in the next few minutes. Glad we have a president who makes time for events like this one.

He also spoke plainly about destruction: overgrazed hills, ripped-out hedgerows, collapsing ecosystems, and species becoming functionally extinct in Ireland within our lifetime.

And yet the overwhelming feeling leaving the room was not despair. It was possibility.

Excellent presidential address with salient points on climate change in Ireland & beyond, and the emissions arising from warfare in our unsettled world.
Catherine Connolly quotes Mary Robinson "incremental thinking will not suffice" & adds "incremental action will not suffice either"

Our sixth annual conference just opened with a speech from Dr. Diarmuid Torney, Director of DCU Institute for Climate and Society.

This year's theme is a call for more climate action. But it is also a chance to create a community and to bring together like-minded people.

The afternoon sessions begin with a panel on where we're going next.

Is the nature restoration law the spark of possibility we've been waiting for?

Education is facing major challenges (AI, high workloads) but big progress made centering sustainability.

We closed the day with a profoundly moving talk by Seán Ronayne. We are lucky to have such a genuine advocate for nature and I'm absolutely looking for the documentary Birdsong on RTÉ player when I get home!

His talk was filled with magic and wonder, with the sounds of nature, birds and badgers echoing through the auditorium.

“I believe that every one of us is born with an absolute grá for nature,” Ronayne said, and his mission is to help us rediscover that lost sense of awe.

At a time when climate records are being broken year after year, the panel asked a challenging question: what is hope and where do we find it?

If you want to find out, watch the panel and join the conversation in the comments.
