Cynic - Veil of Maya
The alternating robo-vox and death snarl, the bubble-chain fretless bass, the butterfly-bee riffing, the sweet fusion interludes...all of that kicks ass. But most of all this one goes out to all the vocoder heads, vocoder gang

Deceased - The Silent Creature
I <3 Deceased, they have such rowdy, jittery, second trip to the party store for kettle chips and M&Ms then coming home to get stoned and watch Dawn of the Dead again energy.
P.S. "Fuck it, I'm putting in some blues licks" solo intro at ~5:00
Bloodbath - So You Die
Before we drift off into a new age of death metal though, let's spend a few minutes in violent, breathless meditation of the kind only Swedeath in full overdrive delivers. A charging, headlong tilt, like it were racing to outrun itself.
Dead - Hammers of the Underworld
Florida death metal at its grottiest. I think this is from '05 but phew, it reeks like it died in '89 and rotted in a culvert for a decade and a half. A truly ancient stench. I love it.
Outer Heaven - Unspeakable Aura
Ferocious and brutal from the start, with passages of breakneck violence, but one thing I love about Outer Heaven is how much the drummer fucken rocks at slower tempos. And the multitracked woman's vocal at 3:40 is startling and beautiful.
Inanna - The Delicate Balance of Terror
After an ominous mid-tempo opening this kicks into a speedy, roiling old school gallop, then tears off into the sky with soaring progressive soloing and an intensely grooving ending. Really love this album.
Lunar Chamber - III. Crystalline Blessed Light Flows... From Violet Mountains Into Lunar Chambers
Chuck Eddy used to talk about heavy metal as new age music. I never quite worked out exactly what he meant by that, but if this is the new age of death doom, I'm very ready for it.
Timeghoul - Boiling in the Hourglass
These guys might be one of the great lost bands of the Old School era, with just two absolutely incredible demos to their name. Doomy, progressive, and epic, with weird, chanted clean singing along with rhythmic death growls. Amazing music.
Afterbirth - In But Not Of
*radio static* "Gnarly! Is this ZZ Top?"
*cchkrrzt* "What if Chameleons UK but heavy?"
*zzz-chkt* "All right! *this* is why I used to like grunge"
*zchczchrt* "They play death-grind on the radio?!? Fuck yeah!"
Equipoise - Cast Into Exile
Build-your-own Vince McMahon meme:
Progressive tech death
Multiple shredding guitarists trading solos
Rippling piano
Gratuitous amounts of fretless bass
Raging Latin-tinged finale
Flamenco interlude
It's about Fullmetal Alchemist??
O damn this is fun!
Maul "Of Human Frailty"
Brutal death metal with good doomy Incantation-al bits and an unusually expressive singer. Sick as hell album cover too.
But what really sends me is the synth-organ at about 1:55.
Why don't more death metal bands have organs?! It sounds fucking killer.
If you like riffs, roars, blast beats, or blurbs, you can check them all out with a Search for DEATH-CEMBER. Expect Enthusiasm, Not Expertise - that's the maxbenign promise.
Nuclear Death - Shrieking Terror
The incomparable Lori Bravo and Nuclear Death, a tornado of dust and barbed wire spreading above the ashes of pre-post-apocalyptic Phoenix AZ. This is from 1986, and it was already after the end of the world, don't you know that yet?

Repulsion - Slaughter of the Innocent
Before Tampa, FLA...before Birmingham, England...long before Gothenberg, Sweden...there was Flint fucking Michigan.
Death metal and grindcore at one of its wellsprings: fast, nasty, brutish, short.

#DEATH-CEMBER.
Wharflurch - Psychedelic Realm ov Hell
Kicks off raw & rowdy, splashing in the mud, trips & crawls & gets up again, panicked & panting...you took a wrong turn & the wrong pills, pal, you're lost. It ends up sounding like a reel of B-movie film burning itself up in the projector.

Bekor Qilish - Infinite Self-Reflecting Circles
Blackened death metal's all right if you like saxophones.
A swirling riff and synth pedals sustain this through passages of black metal snarling, brutal roars, and a great saxophone part...and it ends with an organ solo.

Catatonic Effigy - Putrid Destiny
Swirling avant-garde metal with free drumming beneath noisy stellar debris, slowing expanding into a nebular haze. Maybe death metal in name only, but then again with a name like Catatonic Effigy what else would you call it?

Ruin (Death Metal Cult) - And Soon The Darkness
Cracked black fingernails and teeth red from a bitten tongue metal, croaking & juddering, dragged down, wire-lashed, and filthy fucking necro. I love the murky shape-note singing at the start of this one.
