That idea is based on an overly simplistic model of how RCV actually works in practice. If you have Dem1 and Dem2 (or same for GOP), not all of Dem2's votes are necessarily going to be picked up by Dem1. On net, it's still more advantageous to be the only Dem on the general election ballot.

I know voters are not logical, so maybe this is indeed true, but what you're saying is that you need Dem2 to drop out because of a hypothetical voter who'd rank his ballot
